Drawing from a treasure trove of coastal memories, we’ve crafted a big collection of kids’ beach play ideas that promise days of fun in the sun for your little ones. This list of simple beach activities is teeming with games and explorations that celebrate the spirit of the beach (and while the kids are at play, don’t forget to steal a few moments for yourself, soaking up those relaxing rays!).

Childhood summer vacations…the one constant? They ALWAYS included a trip to the beach. Whether it was an extended stay or just an afternoon visit, we always considered it an exciting, extravagant holiday stop.

From North Carolina’s sea oat-decorated sands, Michigan’s rocky shorelines, and California’s surfer-filled coasts, to the calm banks of Minnesota’s many lakes – I’ve been building up a lifetime of beach play experience.

Motivated by all of those wonderful coastal and lakeside memories, I’ve put together a collection of some of my very favorite SIMPLE beach activities for kids.

These nature-centric play ideas are guaranteed to keep your kids engaged, enjoying the best elements of the beach, thinking creatively, and becoming keen observers of the beach environment around them.

And hey, you may even be able to sit back and soak up some relaxing rays while they play…!

Because not every day can be a day at the beach, visit our collection of kids’ ocean crafts for at-home sea-inspired crafting or rainy day indoor beach play.

Classic Beach Games for Kids and Families

Our list of classic beach games is great to keep on hand for a beach party, vacations, or seaside day trips. These games require little to no preparation and can be set up on a whim, making them ideal for spontaneous beach play.

Whether you’re looking to get competitive, foster teamwork, or just have a little fun, these games promise to keep everyone entertained. From toddlers to teens, and yes, even the ‘big kids’ in the family, there’s something for everyone!

  1. Beach Ball Relay. This is a fun, classic game involving teamwork. Two teams race to pass the beach ball over their heads and between their legs to the end of the line and back.
  2. Tug of War. All you need is a rope and a line drawn in the sand. Each team pulls on the rope, trying to drag the other team across the line. It’s a classic test of strength and teamwork.
  3. Beach Volleyball. Draw a makeshift court in the sand and let the game begin! This can be a fun way to get some exercise and enjoy some friendly competition.
  4. Sand Pictionary. Just like the classic game, but using a stick to draw in the sand. One person draws, and the rest guess what it is. Perfect for exercising both creativity and communication skills.
  5. Beach Frisbee Golf. Set up targets using items like towels or beach umbrellas and throw the frisbee toward them. It’s golf but with a frisbee!
  6. Bury the Treasure. Hide a “treasure” (like a small toy or a seashell) in the sand while the other players close their eyes. They then have to search for the hidden treasure.
  7. Sand Pail Relay. A water-filled version of the egg-and-spoon race. Kids must fill cups or beach toys with ocean water and pour it into their team’s sand pail. The first team to fill their bucket wins!
  8. Crab Walk Race. In this game, kids walk like crabs from one point to another. The first one to reach the finish line wins. It’s a fun way to get moving and enjoy some silly physical activity.
  9. Beach Limbo. How low can you go? All you need is a stick or a pool noodle. Play some fun music and see who can go the lowest under the stick without touching it.
  10. Sponge Toss. Grab some pails, load up some sponges with seawater, and start the game! The idea is to toss the sponges into the bucket. As the game progresses, participants should take a step back after each successful toss, increasing the challenge.
  11. Beach Bowling. Set up a few empty bottles or cans and use a beach ball to knock them down. Regular bowling with a beachy twist!
  12. Musical Towels. Similar to musical chairs, but with beach towels. When the music stops, everyone must find a towel to sit on. Remove one towel after each round until there’s only one left.
  13. Flip Flop Toss. Line up and see who can toss their flip-flop the furthest. Just make sure there’s enough space and no one in the line of fire!
  14. Capture the Flag. This game requires a bit of space and two teams. Each team hides a flag on their side, and the goal is to capture the other team’s flag without being tagged.
  15. Ring Toss. Bring along some diving rings and a stick. Plant the stick in the sand and see who can toss their ring closest to it. A simple yet fun game that can become quite competitive!
