Celebrating Heritage and Pride Months With Kids
Use our Heritage and Pride Months Resource Hub to find kids’ activities that honor diversity and inclusion all throughout the year.
About THE HERITAGE MONTH CALENDAR
Heritage and Pride Months are designated periods in the United States that celebrate and recognize the contributions, history, and culture of specific groups of people. These observances serve multiple purposes:
- Education: They provide opportunities to learn about the history, achievements, and challenges faced by different communities.
- Awareness: They raise public consciousness about diverse cultures and identities within our society.
- Celebration: They honor the contributions and influence of various groups to the nation’s history, culture, and achievements.
- Empowerment: They foster pride within communities and encourage individuals to embrace their heritage or identity.
- Advocacy: They often highlight ongoing issues or challenges faced by certain groups and promote positive change.
Heritage Months typically focus on ethnic or cultural groups, while Pride Months celebrate the identities, achievements, and rights of specific communities. These observances often commemorate important milestones in civil rights movements.
Exploring HERITAGE AND PRIDE MONTHS With Kids
Exploring cultural heritage offers a powerful way to promote inclusivity, honor diversity, and nurture empathy in our children. This hub provides comprehensive resources for each Pride/Heritage Month recognized in the United States, featuring engaging activities for kids, including art projects, crafts, reading lists, educational content, music, and recipes.
Each Heritage Month page presents carefully selected activities and materials designed to:
- Inspire interest in various cultures
- Build empathy and cross-cultural understanding
- Highlight the achievements of diverse communities
- Instill pride in personal heritage
- Offer enjoyable, relatable, interactive learning experiences
For educators, parents, and caregivers, these resources provide valuable tools to guide children in exploring the rich cultural landscape of our society. By engaging with these materials, we hope to inspire a generation that values diversity, practices inclusivity, and approaches others with openness and respect.
A Note from Amanda
When compiling these resources, it was really important to me that b&b feature content created by those people who identify with the cultures and communities whenever possible. I wanted to make sure the materials were coming from authentic, first-hand perspectives rather than outsider interpretations.
Rather than just checking boxes for Heritage Month observances, I wanted to curate collections that reflect the personal stories, traditions, and insights of the cultures being highlighted. Hopefully, you’ll feel a stronger sense of cultural resonance and these activities will have more meaning, knowing all of the materials come from voices within each community.
While these monthly observances provide focused opportunities to celebrate specific cultures, it’s important to recognize and help kids understand that diversity and inclusion are year-round commitments.
Working on these pages has been an enlightening process that’s opened my eyes to an impressive range of talented creators I was previously unaware of, and they’re just the beginning of my own commitment, and I’m so excited to continue filling them in with fresh new finds as I work to broaden my own sources of inspiration and learning.
