Observing Disability Pride Month With Kids
In the United States, July is Disability Pride Month. If you’re looking for ways to involve your kids, here are a few ideas…
About Disability Pride Month
Disability Pride Month celebrates the diverse experiences, talents, and contributions of people with disabilities. It’s a time to recognize disability as a natural part of human diversity and to challenge stigma and discrimination.
Disability Pride Month celebrates a wide spectrum of disabilities, including but not limited to:
- Physical disabilities (e.g., mobility impairments, amputations)
- Sensory disabilities (e.g., blindness, deafness)
- Cognitive disabilities (e.g., Down syndrome, autism)
- Learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, ADHD)
- Mental health conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety disorders)
- Chronic illnesses (e.g., multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia)
- Developmental disabilities
- Neurological disorders
When discussing disability with children, it’s important to use respectful language that emphasizes people first. For instance, we say “person with autism” rather than “autistic person.” However, some individuals prefer identity-first language, like “deaf person.” As with all aspects of identity, it’s best to listen to how people describe themselves.
This month gives us a chance to explore the depth of human experiences, challenge our assumptions, and discover new perspectives. Whether it’s learning about accessibility issues or innovative assistive technologies, becoming advocates for disability rights, listening to and sharing stories, or simply celebrating the unique contributions of people with disabilities, this month invites us to embrace our differences and recognize the strength in our diversity.
