Simple Ways to Give Your Sensory Play a Valentine Theme

You can take any of the supplies listed above, mixing whatever you have, and throwing them all together in a bin or bag for instant play. Typically though, I’ve found that it’s a solid theme that really sells the activity and makes it memorable on special days or occasions.

Taking inspiration from our supply lists, here are ten quick suggestions you can try or modify to fit your favorite style of sensory play:

A valentines day flower sensory bin
  1. Cupid’s Cozy Cloud Bin – Mix shaving cream with a dash of pink dye. Add marshmallows and red, pink, or white feathers for a soft, fluffy sensory experience. Perfect for little hands to squish and explore.
    • Pop this mixture into a gallon-sized Ziplock and let kids mush it around, mixing the pink food coloring into the shaving cream as they push it around.
  2. Love Potion – Create a magical bin with oil and water. Using red-striped paper straws for potion-mixing, add in red and pink food coloring, Valentine candies, and bath fizzers, and watch the swirling colors and shapes.
    • Turn this activity into a Valentine sensory bag by filling a bag with oil and water or hair gel, putting in a few drops of pink food coloring, and adding candy like conversation hearts or heart-shaped gummies.
  3. Sweet Berry Farm Washing Bin – Fill a clean bin with water and ice cubes. Set out red and pink in small bowls (strawberries, raspberries, and cherries are a yummy assortment!). Using sponges that have been cut into heart-shapes or small produce brushes, kids can clean the berries, put them in a bowl, and then sort and scoop them into heart-printed cupcake liners for snacks.
    • You can modify this activity for little ones by filling a clear plastic bottle with water and berries. Make sure the cap’s on tight, then let them roll, flip, and shake! As a bonus, this sweet berry sensory bottle will give your fruit a good washing before snack time.
  4. Blooming Love Flower Shop Tray – Include real flowers or faux florals, heart-printed cupcake liners (as pots or vases), and small gardening tools like heart-shaped cookie cutters. This setup encourages imaginative play around arranging and selling flowers.
    • Pour flowers and white rice into a plastic bottle for a quick Valentine’s Day flower sensory jar.
  5. February Ice Garden Bin – Combine water, flower petals (real or silk), ice, water, and scented bath salts for a multi-sensory experience that stimulates touch, smell, and sight. For an extra Valentine’s Day touch, you can use heart molds for your ice.
  6. Valentine’s Day Treasure Hunt – Use a mixture of red and pink dyed rice as your base. Hide small wooden hearts, red bottle caps, and heart-shaped paper confetti within the rice. Children can use heart-shaped baking tins or molds to sift through the rice and find the hidden treasures.
  7. Sweetheart’s Treat Shop – Create a playful candy store using playdough as the base. Add in peppermint candies, conversation heart candies, and red bottle caps as ‘candy jars’. Provide small heart-shaped baking tins or molds for children to ‘sell’ and ‘buy’ candy in their imaginative store.
  8. Valentine Playdough Station – Use homemade or store-bought playdough, dyed in Valentine’s colors. Include letter-shaped cookie cutters, red lentil pasta to use as decoration, and wooden hearts for stamping. Children can create their own ‘love letters’ and Valentine’s messages in the dough.
  9. A Wonka Chocolate Factory Bin – Fill a sensory bin with a brown-colored flour and water mixture to mimic chocolate (you can even mix in a little cocoa for scent!). Place small recycled chocolate boxes, heart-shaped paper confetti, and red or pink paper party cups. Kids can pretend to fill the chocolate boxes and mini cups with their unique creations.
  10. Painter’s Palette of Love – Set up a finger painting station using finger paints in Valentine’s Day colors. Add heart-shaped sponges and red or pink paper party cups for stamping and mixing, promoting creativity and sensory exploration.
