Follow these easy step-by-step instructions for instant beach scavenger hunts you can print and save for summer vacation!

Download our free printable kids’ beach scavenger hunts and print onto cardstock or copy paper (choose borderless printing if you’d like the printing to extend to the edges like ours).

Laminate or slip into a sheet protector (optional).

To keep your copies clean and ready for repeat seaside hunts, you can use a self-laminating sheet or slip them into a sheet protector, then punch a hole in a corner and tie a dry-erase marker on with a colorful ribbon!

Color, decorate, and add embellishments (optional).

You can color and decorate your printed beach hunt pages using fun supplies or craft embellishments like watercolors, feathers, felt, beads, etc. Our illustrated blank sheet is a great place to jot down fun beach facts or observations as you find them!

This beach hunt is a great interactive outdoor activity to keep in the car, hanging by the back door, or on the porch. If you’re DIY’ing your own summer camp this year, we have some ideas for variations you can try to create your own “backyard” beach below…

Four Ways to Use Our Kids’ Beach Hunt Printable

1. Make beach story stones.

You can print, cut out the beachy illustrations, then glue or Mod Podge onto rocks to make your own set of beach story stones. Ask the kids to find various items on the beach that they can use to create a story.

Or combine your story stones with items kids have already gathered from the scavenger hunt (like shells, seaweed, and rocks) and use them to represent characters, settings, or props. Once they’ve collected their items, have each child narrate their story using the found items as visual aids.

2. Print out paper seashore elements for a backyard beach hunt.

Are you excited about exploring the coast with your little ones but still days away from the beach? Print out two copies of our seaside scavenger hunt and save one to give to your little beach babies. Cut out the illustrated elements from the other sheet and hide them around your backyard or garden.

Tuck them behind landscaping, put them under rocks, or attach them to a popsicle stick or garden stake for a scavenger hunt that guarantees seashore-favorite-finding success. A lovely virtual trip to the coast for outdoor beach games!

3. Turn your printable beach hunt into a summer vacation journal.

Fold and staple half sheets of paper together to make a simple small journal to record your beach activities and adventures. You can cut out and paste in the elements from our beach scavenger hunt printable to illustrate the journal.

4. Combine it with other outdoor scavenger hunts.

For a full day of outdoor hunting, you can double up on the search party fun with a bug scavenger hunt or our more general free printable nature scavenger hunt.

Or use this simple DIY leaf scavenger hunt idea to scout out a variety of leaves and learn more about the trees in your area. You can find our whole collection of kids’ scavenger hunt ideas here.

Eight More Easy Beach Scavenger Hunt Ideas for Kids

Low or no-prep beach scavenger hunt ideas to help you and your kids soak up the sun. You can cater these versatile ideas to any kind of beach you visit. They work just as well for a lake-themed pebble-beach hunt as for ocean-themed sandy beach scavenger hunts, an urban beach, or secluded tropical beaches. We even have an idea for a backyard beach scavenger hunt ( that’s SO great for summer birthday parties!)…

1. Try a people-watching scavenger hunt on the beach.

Create a list of unique or interesting beachgoer characteristics, such as someone wearing a funny hat, a person floating in the surf, a beachcomber using a metal detector, or a couple playing beach volleyball, and have participants discreetly search for and tally these sightings.

This activity promotes observation skills and adds an entertaining twist to people-watching, making it an engaging beach pastime for all ages.

2. Play Beach I-Spy.

Have players take turns choosing an object within their line of sight and give a descriptive clue, such as “I spy something blue and wavy,” for others to guess. This activity is a simple and entertaining way to engage with the surroundings, making it ideal for beach outings with friends and family.

3. Have a beach-themed scavenger hunt at home.

To create a beach-themed scavenger hunt at home, transform your backyard or living room with beach-inspired decorations and hide small treasures such as seashells, beach balls, and sunglasses for the children to find.

This activity is perfect for a summer birthday party as it combines the excitement of a treasure hunt with the joy of the beach, allowing kids to have a fun, engaging, and memorable experience.

4. Look for Beach Shapes and Patterns.

Have kids search for objects on the beach that resemble specific shapes or patterns, such as a heart-shaped rock, a starfish, a piece of driftwood that looks like a letter, or a seashell with a unique pattern.

This variation works especially well for preschools practicing shape and letter recognition, or kids who may not be familiar with some of the beach-specific items on our list.

5. Go on a sensory beach scavenger hunt.

List items your kids can safely taste, touch, smell, see, and hear at the beach. You can include sensory experiences like the sound of the waves or seagulls, the taste of salty air or ice cream, the feel of sand between toes or cool water, the smell of sunscreen, or a specific blooming flower.

6. Have a beach animal hunt.

Challenge kids to spot as many different beach-dwelling animals as they can, like crabs, seagulls, sandpipers, or other local wildlife. Or look for specific animal classifications, like beach Arthropods, for example. They can take pictures or draw the animals they find in a notebook.

7. Organize a beach cleanup hunt.

Turn a beach cleanup activity into a scavenger hunt by having the kids search for different types of trash, such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans, food wrappers, and fishing nets. Make sure to provide a list of items adults should help gather if they run across them, as well as gloves for safety.

8. Invite kids on a twilight beach story hunt.

Provide each child with a flashlight, glow sticks, or their own DIY kid-safe lantern, to make the search more exciting while they look for items from our hunts or follow clues you’ve put together.

As prep for a safe twilight beach scavenger hunt experience for kids, pick a small area to stick to, and walk it first to be sure it’s free from debris (like broken glass or large pieces of driftwood) and easily accessible at night.
